Mobile Devices Use More Wi-Fi Than PCs

According to a survey by Meraki, nearly 60 percent of people now access the web through mobile phones, compared to a mere one-third last year.

Mobile devices now surpass computers in Wi-Fi network usage, as more people access the Internet with smartphones and tablets than traditional PCs. Computers running Windows and the Mac OS declined among all devices using Wi-Fi networks to 36 percent from 63 percent a year ago. Specifically, Windows-based PCs shrunk to 23 percent from 42 percent last year, while Macs fell to 13 percent from 21 percent in 2010.

The study suggests that desktop PCs may soon go the way of the dinosaur. However that is somewhat optimistic.

The Comscore Search Market Rankings data for the US in March show that search is growing at 7% between the two months, much of this from the mobile web. Google has a new slogan, Mobile First.

Google is renaming the Local Business Center as Google Places. One out of five searches on Google are related to location so this is their focus.

Google offers customized QR codes for business cards or other marketing materials. Customers can scan them with certain smart phones and be taken directly to the mobile Place Page for that business.

The mobile sector has much greater potential than the existing PC world and Google is determined to get the lion’s share.

Golden Ears Bridge Now On MapQuest

Tele Atlas, one of the map suppliers to Google Maps has now included the Golden Ears Bridge in British Columbia in their database. This has been picked up by MapQuest but Google Maps still does not show the Bridge, which was two years in the making and has now been in operation for 9 months. Going from Fort Langley to Pitt Meadows across the Fraser River, Google Maps still suggests taking the Albion Ferry, which has not run for 9 months.

Google In Stock Info

On the go, you need to know whether the stuff you are looking for is available at stores nearby. Google has launched an in stock info system with data from five major retail outlets and are taking volunteers from businesses that want to join in the program.

As Google explains, just look for the blue dots. If you see a blue dot next to search results, tap on the adjacent “In stock nearby” link, and on the seller’s page the item will show as either “In Stock” or has “Limited Availability” near you. You can also see how far away the stores are from you if you’ve enabled My Location or manually specified your location. It works with any iPhone, Palm WebOS phone, or any Android-powered device in the US.

Google Mobile Click-to-Call

Google now adds a Click-to-Call feature to the advertisements it shows on mobile devices. Calling the business is now easier thanks to a feature that allows advertisers to add a clickable local phone number to their mobile ads. If you’re using an iPhone, Android, or other smartphone, you just click the number to call the business.

If an advertisement does not strike your fancy, you can always use GOOG-411 and that is of course free search. Dial 1-800-GOOG-411 (from any phone) and state the location and business type. Expect to see many more mobile applications like these from Google as it applies the Mobile First principle.

More Seniors Mean More Business

A Statistics Canada Report shows that Canadians have a longer life expectancy now and that seniors constitute a larger and larger share of the population.

Although this puts pressure on the federal budget, given increased costs for health systems, it does create new business opportunities. Seniors are active and wish to maintain their independence thus requiring appropriate safe and secure accommodation. Their sports and volunteering activities also create extra demand for products and services. There is an associated increase in death rates which brings greater demands in the casket industry. That even attracted Wal-Mart into the online casket market.

RCMP Musical Ride in Vancouver Olympics celebrations

Today the Vancouver 2010 Olympics starts and there are lots of associated fun-filled activities. One important symbol of our Canadian heritage will be on show. The RCMP Musical Ride will take part in the Surrey 2010 Celebrations from Saturday, Feb 13th to Feb 28th.

A commemorative poster of the 2009 BC Tour of the RCMP Musical Ride is on sale at the Surrey event in the RCMP store. The poster is 14″ x 18″ and Valley Therapeutic Equestrian Association (VTEA) will receive all funds generated . VTEA provides therapeutic riding for special needs children. Some copies autographed by members of the Musical Ride are on sale for $25. What a great souvenir.

Google promotes its local business listings in storefronts around the U.S. with QR codes.

Stickers bearing Google’s logo and a QR code have been distributed to 100,000 of the most popular businesses in Google’s Local Business Center database. Starting this week consumers will be able to use code-scanning applications on modern phones to look up the Google listing for that particular restaurant, store, or dry cleaner. The stickers will be prominently displayed in store windows of participating businesses, and represent a shot across the bow of companies like Yelp which offer similar branded services.
